CMIIW.

16 Conclusions :
16 Conclusions From Manchester United 3 Liverpool 2
Posted 19/09/10 15:56
Instant reacting...
* Sir Alex would have been apoplectic had United let another win sneak out of their grasp and his tetchy post-match demeanour reflected as much. Even in victory he was talking of "a travesty of a scoreline" and his irritation, doubtless a consequence of the pressure Chelsea are exerting as runaway leaders, resulted in the graceless remark that Liverpool "depended on decisions from the linesman to get back in the game". If Ferguson wanted to point an accusing finger then he should have looked at Jonny Evans' recklessness, the ease with which Joe Cole bypassed Paul Scholes and the chasm in front of United's defence that paved the way for Liverpool's equaliser.
* The criticism of the possession-starved Fernando Torres was overdone last week and continued to be so during the opening half-hour at Old Trafford. It is suddenly the fashionable thing to question the Spaniard's work rate and application even when it is patently apparent that the elephant in the room is the service he receives - just look at the impact he made when the ball finally arrived at his feet in the second half. But there are no excuses for his feeble, lame, half-hearted marking of Dimi Berbatov when the Bulgarian scored United's first. On the wrong side of his man as the corner was taken, Torres compounded his mistake by backing out of the challenge altogether to leave the league's form striker with a free header. Even then, the concession could have been avoided if only Paul Konchesky hadn't meandered away from the post he was supposed to be patrolling. From Liverpool's perspective, it was an awful goal to concede and the sort likely to result in an epidemic of cat-kicking abuse on Merseyside.
* Dimi Berbatov has finally made it at Manchester United. Almost two years to the day since his debut in defeat at Anfield, the Bulgarian has at last come good. Very good. Courtesy of his hat-trick, the closest thing to a guarantee of affection in Mancunia, his supporters amongst the Old Trafford faithful will now vastly outnumber the snipers. On a day that Wayne Rooney assumed the role of passenger, Berbatov stood out as the difference between the two sides. All credit to him. It is the ultimate high-profile, big-signing zero-to-hero story: six months ago, he was an unused substitute when Liverpool travelled to Old Trafford.
* Nani's theatrics are an embarrassment. His 82nd-minute dive was disgraceful and the sour note of the afternoon was that, with his offence going unpunished, United were able to score the game's decisive goal just a minute later.
* But Liverpool's greatest grievance will be Howard Webb's decision not to deem John O'Shea's pull on Torres as the denial of a goalscoring opportunity. The decision was taken quickly and apparently made without any consultation between Webb and Darren Cann, his long-time assistant whose flag-waving prompted the award of a free-kick. Ref365 argues in support of Webb on the basis that replays 'suggest' Torres would not have reached the ball. Denied the use of a replay, it must have been a 50-50 call from the officials and it's certainly debatable whether a defender making such a cynical foul in the full knowledge that he was the last man deserved the benefit of any doubt.
* Then again, it could be argued that a goalscoring opportunity - clear or otherwise - was evidently not denied because the outstanding Steven Gerrard duly scored from the resulting free-kick. It's a familiar circular argument that only ever reaches the same starting point: the law is fundamentally flawed. A word, though, on Gerrard. Magnificent. Even without his goalscoring contribution, he was the only player on the pitch whose performance came close to rivalling Berbatov due to his whole-hearted endeavour.
* Nonetheless, the wisdom of selecting Raul Meireles as Torres' partner rather than Gerrard remains questionable. The possibly/probably-errant pass which sparked the O'Shea foul on Torres was the sum total of their partnership. It is an illustration of how disjointed Liverpool have been so far this term, and their euphemistic status as a work in progress under Roy Hodgson, that Torres has had four different partners in his five league outings this term.
* The Great Unknown of the game is whether Gerrard deliberately directed his free-kick to go through the small gap left between Darren Fletcher and John O'Shea. He must have, because a side-footed free-kick from that position would have made no sense otherwise.
* United remain hugely, worryingly over-dependent on their golden oldies. Paul Scholes has started every one of United's last 12 league games and Ryan Giggs ten of them.
* Glen Johnson as a right-sided midfielder? He could hardly perform to any less effect than the utterly anonymous Maxi Rodriguez. A change in position for Johnson may also be the only way that Carragher can prolong his playing days in the Liverpool team. The veteran's inclusion in the team ahead of Daniel Agger is increasingly difficult to explain, let alone support.
* Paul Konchesky is so far out of his depth at this level that he needs armbands.
* Premier League matches are invariably far more entertaining in the second half than they are in the first.
* Liverpool need to spend a lot more time on the training ground practicising their crossing.
* Both of Sunday's skippers had reason to celebrate Sir Alex's decision to appoint Nemanjic Vidic as United captain ahead of Rio Ferdinand. It is ludicrous that Ferdinand, rather than Gerrard, is officially listed as England's captain when he has appeared in just 41 of his club's last 101 fixtures.
* Referees don't require much match fitness. Between the World Cup final in the first week of July and his appointment to take change of the "daddy of all derbies" contest this Sunday, Webb's only engagement was WBA v Tottenham.
* The final word has to be that, on balance, United deserved their victory. They were quicker, brighter, better. It was a victory that the league probably needed as well. Without it, Chelsea's lead would already be depressingly ominious.
